How Pedometers Work

Pedometers are those devices that measure how far an individual has walked. The way that a pedometer works is by counting how many steps a person takes by measuring how much the body shakes. The pedometer’s measurements come from the vibrations that are sent up to it from the wearer’s foot hitting the ground. 

Pedometers have reportedly been around for more than two centuries. While it is unclear exactly who invented them, the credit tends to go to Thomas Jefferson more often than not since he brought a pedometer to the United States after he spent some time in France. Some people give him credit for inventing the pedometer because he either make an improvement upon one that he procured during his travels or France or because he introduced it to a new audience in the United States. 

Pedometers offer people a variety of benefits. Perhaps the most notable benefit that it offers is that it makes it easier to keep count of how many steps a person takes throughout the day. It also allows people to see how far they have traveled during a walk. Monitoring how far an individual travels each day can help him or her gradually increase his or her distance to obtain a more challenging aerobic workout. Basically, pedometers are ideal for setting exercise goals and meeting them since they offer people a way to keep track of data. 



Pedometers can also provide people with an indication of their activity levels. For instance, some people might believe that they are more active than they actually are. After wearing a pedometer, they might realize that they don’t walk quite as much as they though they did, and then they can adjust their exercise regimes accordingly to accommodate for more exercise. 

Pedometers do not take into account the intensity level of a walk, however. All they do is measure the distance of the walk. Therefore, people who want to increase their walk’s intensities can simply set a goal to try to reach a certain number of steps within a certain period of time. Additionally, walking on uneven ground or having the pedometer at an angle might affect the counter on the device, depending upon the type of pedometers that individuals have. Some makes and models might be more sensitive than others.
