The Medea Complex Review

'I did it because I love my child. Wouldn't any mother care to do the same? I didn't feel guilty when the blood ran over my hands, yet neither did I feel vindicated. I just felt I had protected my child in the only way I knew how.'

*** Based On A True Story ***

Anne wakes up in a strange bed, having been kidnapped from her home. Slowly, she realizes she is in a lunatic asylum.

1885. Anne Stanbury - Committed to a lunatic asylum, having been deemed insane and therefore unfit to stand trial for the crime of which she is indicted. But is all as it seems? Edgar Stanbury - the grieving husband and father who is torn between helping his confined wife recover her sanity, and seeking revenge on the woman who ruined his life.

Dr George Savage - the well respected psychiatrist, and chief medical officer of Bethlem Royal Hospital. Ultimately, he holds Anne's future wholly in his hands. The Medea Complex tells the story of a misunderstood woman suffering from insanity in an era when mental illnesses' were all too often misdiagnosed and mistreated. A deep and riveting psychological thriller set within an historical context, packed full of twists and turns, The Medea Complex explores the nature of the human psyche: what possesses us, drives us, and how love, passion, and hope for the future can drive us to insanity.

I received a copy of the book at no cost in exchange for my honest review

My Review

I am a huge history buff, add in murder and intrigue to the history and I am seriously hooked! I was pulled in by the mystery and murder part of this story. I think every one can understand the fear of being locked up. Back in the 1800's it was so completely different than how things are now. It was thought that reading, yes just reading a book, could make a woman crazy! Lady Anne awakens in an asylum accused of a horrible crime. The Medea Complex is graphic in describing how the perceived mentally ill were treated back then. The story follows her apparent recovery and release, and her subsequent suspicious disappearance.

There is so much to say about this book, but I'm afraid to give too much away. There are some very shocking twists and turns that will leave the reader speechless. The story is wholly engaging and moves at a very fast pace. You will not want to put this story down until the very last page.

Pieces of the story and characters in The Medea complex are based on real events and people. The author lists her references at the end of the book, so needless to say I have several more books added to my To Be Read pile after this.

This book will stay in my Kindle for a very long time and I know I will be reading it again in the future! A 5/5 does not do this story justice! If you are an avid reader like me you need this book in your collection!!
