Painted Black

Summary
Jo Sullivan just wanted some new material for her column in Winds of Change, a weekly rag willing to dust the dirt off the seamier side of Chicago. Then she meets fifteen-year-old Lexie Green, with her haunting eyes, eerie tale, and the terror that sends the girl fleeing into the night. When Lexie disappears, Jo finds herself haunted by her own dark past and unable to ignore the anonymous faces of youth on the streets, Together with Cry, a street graffiti artist and friend of Lexie, Jo uncovers a path littered with corpses, corporate greed and one man's private collection of freeze-dried cadavers.

Christopher Robert Young, Cry for short, told himself he went with Lexie to keep her safe, that it had nothing to do with his struggle to avoid hustling along the harbor like Moon and the others. Selling blow jobs for forty bucks, however, pales in comparison to what he finds in Cole's apartment above the funeral home. And even a hungry kid will only go so far to fill his stomach. In the ensuing struggle, Chris escapes but Lexie does not and that fact still haunts him.

Sidney Cole's fascination with death has soothed him since childhood. From the dead pigeon he kept in a shoe box under his bed so he could stroke the downy feathers, to the first failed experiment in human sublimation he should have disposed of-but didn't. He just wants to be left alone with his collection, and his fantasies. And Philip Quinlan had promised him peace.

Review
This is one of those stories that really opens your eyes. Homeless street kids are everywhere but
do we really stop and notice them as we go about our day to day lives? Jo Sullivan is a reporter
writing a Street Stories column who after a brief meeting with Lexie Green becomes embroiled in
one of the most unique mysteries I've read in a long time. From drugs, hustling, and child abuse
to the seedy and disgusting desires of a strange and twisted man this story keeps you reading from page one to the last word. Dark, gritty and suspenseful this is a seat of your pants ride that you won't soon forget.

Debra R. Borys spent eight years volunteering with homeless on the streets of both Chicago and Seattle. She is a freelance writer who specializes in fiction but has experience in everything from news shorts to how-to manuals. Several of her short stories have been published in online and print magazines. Currently she is working on a second novel in the Jo Sullivan series which combines mystery and suspense with the reality of throw away youth striving to survive.

The Mine

Summary

In 2000, Joel Smith is a cocky, adventurous young man who sees the world as his playground. But when the college senior, days from graduation, enters an abandoned Montana mine, he discovers the price of reckless curiosity. He emerges in May 1941 with a cell phone he can't use, money he can't spend, and little but his wits to guide his way. Stuck in the age of Whirlaway, swing dancing, and a peacetime draft, Joel begins a new life as the nation drifts toward war. With the help of his 21-year-old trailblazing grandmother and her friends, he finds his place in a world he knew only from movies and books. But when an opportunity comes to return to the present, Joel must decide whether to leave his new love in the past or choose a course that will alter their lives forever. THE MINE follows a humbled man through a critical time in history as he adjusts to new surroundings and wrestles with the knowledge of things to come.

Review

Positively captivating! I don't read a lot of historical stories but I've read a few lately and this book is top of the list. I've been missing out! There is a little bit of everything in this story. Time travel, romance, and adventure come together in The Mine. The main character Joel walks into an abandoned mine and when he walks out he's traveled back in time to the early 1940's. He's thrust in to an unfamiliar world with knowledge of whats to come. The depth of the characters was amazing and I fell in love with each and every one of them. Laughter abounds but so do some truly heartwrenching decisions for Joel as the day of the attacks on Pearl Harbor approach. With an ending that will take the reader completely by surprise this book will thrill any reader.

How I Use Social Media to Promote My Books

I have a very high powered career as CEO of a Security Company and as an author. I have written three books to help parents protect their teens that text, use Facebook , and social media, Safe Text: Protecting Your Teens from the Dangers of Texting, Protecting Your Teens on Facebook, and Social Media Secrets Every Parent of College Bound Teens Must know. I not only open their eyes to what dangers lurk on the Internet and texting, but also tell the parents what to do about the problems and also how to protect themselves. Not everything is negative about the Internet and there are ways for parents to help their teens use social media for their advantage, just as authors can use social media to their advantage.
In the process of getting the word out about my book with the help of Assisting Authors Online, I have done the following:

I have a new website and blog, http://www.protectyourteens.com, for the express purpose of advising parents on dealing with enormous challenges that teens face in their interaction with Social Media. I also guide them to find ways that Social Media can help their teens in networking and getting into colleges of their choice. Every author should have a blog to connect with potential readers. It can also publicize events to promote their books such as contests, book signings. virtual tour schedules, and non-virtual book schedules, provide resources, etc. Every time I publish a new post it goes to Facebook. Twitter, and many other social media sites, blog directories and feeds.

I have a new Facebook Timeline Authors Page. http://www. facebook.com/protectyourteens. Every author should have the reach and target accuracy that Facebook affords. Facebook has a main page with a timeline cover. My cover publicizes my books. Underneath the cover is the app strip. I have used this to my full advantage by asking people to like my page through the photos tab. I have also added three tabs that link to more pages (Facebook calls extra pages apps).
Welcome page : People who have liked my page can sign up for extra information and tips. They can enter my contest on this page because it includes the contest form.
Website and Blog: My entire website is accessible on this page so fans do not have to leave Facebook to read my blog or access anything on the website.
Books Page: My actual Amazon Author Central Page was brought into Facebook. Here, the fans can find out more information about me and there are direct links to my Amazon book pages to read reviews, look inside the book, and purchase the books. The key here is that they never have to leave Facebook. Marketing research shows that people would rather stay in one place especially to purchase products.

I am planning to add a video page and possibly a Pinterest Page which will have links to important resources.

Linkedin: I am planning on having a Linkedin group fo bring together Parents and teens that can share stories, teach each other techniques, and ask for advice, etc. Having your own group on Linkedin can build an author's reputation as an expert in their field.

Project: I have a comprehensive project that teachers and people who home school can use with the teens as my books are directed towards parents. This project goes with the Safe Text book and is based on best practices in education, learning targets, and national standards for education as well as my book. This project is free and can be found on my website. The project was developed by Janis Friesler (CEO of Assisting Authors Online), an award winning educator who specializes in project based learning.

So there you have it. This is the way I have used social media to get the word out about my books and my brand. Please comment below on how you use social media. Don't forget to enter the contest. I have really enjoyed writing this guest blog. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Bead For Life

Bead for Life

I received the Bead for Life Lip Balm and the Shea Butter Soap to review. I received these products for the purpose of a review from Charisma Media Network .  All the opinions expressed in this review are solely  my own.

I absolutely loved the packaging. As soon as I opened the envelope I could smell the products. They smelled wonderful and I couldn't wait to use them! I have very sensitive skin. I am currently battling Eczema and Rosacea. The soap smelled wonderful and did not irritate my skin at all, and in fact made my skin feel a little better and softer. The lip balm is great also. My lips felt softer and smoother with the first use. Overall I think these are great products from a great company and I will be be shopping more of their products in the future!

Awaited Guest Post

Nothing like a plane crash to help you find your destiny…
Hi, everyone. Russell, here. Lynn Rush wrote about me in her latest novel, Awaited. My sweet Annabelle had to help me write this post as I’m just now becoming familiar with blogging. She’s very good at working with computers.
It’s not really my thing. I think I’m much like David in that fashion. While his book Wasteland was being promoted, he had to show up on a few blogs and interviews. It’s so weird to think that I, a Guardian, am anything like a half-demon—eh well, former half-demon—but we do have a few things in common.
One thing—we resist change. Probably because over the four centuries we’ve existed, we’ve seen things come and go, so we don’t really know what’s going to stick around for good. Jessica, our Merus, keeps trying to “modernize” us older Guardians, but I think we frustrate her more than anything. For instance, I’d rather just pick up the telephone and call someone than have a computer chip implanted behind my ear in order to contact them.
Call me old-fashioned.
Another thing we have in common—we found our mates in unexpected places. You’ll have to read Wasteland to hear David and Beka’s story, but for me, I found Annabelle in a plane crash—and she was unconscious.
Here’s a little snippet from the story.

I breathed into her, then turned and drew in a gulp of air and let it flow into her. A gentle scent of sandalwood and sugar wrapped around me. Coiled me in warmth. The woman flinched beneath me.
Then coughed.
I tilted her to the side and water spewed from her mouth. A tremor rocked her little body. The crackle of a flame, and the scent of burning leaves filled the air. “There you go. Get it out.” I patted her back.
She flopped back and her eyes opened wide.
The same honey irises I’d seen a hundred times in my dreams stared at me. “Can you hear me?”
The lids hung heavy over her dilated eyes, then slid shut.
“No. No. Stay with me.” I patted her shoulder.
Durk joined me, kneeling beside her on the other side. I pressed my finger to her neck.
“She’s got to be in shock. Freezing. Get that fire going.” I peeled my shirt over my head as I stood. “Find all you can to get a small shelter formed around the fire.” I ripped at the belt securing my soggy pants to me. “I’ll warm her up.”
Wasn’t exactly how I’d dreamed I would first lay with a woman, but I’d be damned if I was going to let her die.
She was mine.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw her. The woman I’d dreamt of for months—and Guardians aren’t known for having prophetic dreams, mind you. But then again, I never would have thought I’d team up with a half-demon, either. So, things are changing all around, that’s for sure. I guess I will have to get used to it. How did you meet your mate?

Get my debut YA novel Kings & Queens at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, iTunes, Kobo.
Available in eBook and paperback. eBook, only $0.99 for a limited time.

Kings & Queens Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Majesty Alistair wants police to look further into her father's fatal car wreck, hopes the baseball team she manages can reclaim the state crown, aches for Derek...or, no...maybe Alec...maybe. And she mostly wishes to retract the hateful words she said to her dad right before slamming the door in his face, only to never see him again.

All her desires get sidelined, though, when she overhears two fellow students planning a church massacre. She doubts cops will follow up on her tip since they're sick of her coming around with notions of possible crimes-in-the-works. And it's not like she cries wolf. Not really. They'd be freaked too, but they're not the ones suffering from bloody dreams that hint at disaster like some crazy, street guy forecasting the Apocalypse.

So, she does what any habitual winner with zero cred would do...try to I.D. the nutjobs before they act. But, when their agenda turns out to be far bigger than she ever assumed, and even friends start looking suspect, the truth and her actions threaten to haunt her forever, especially since she's left with blood on her hands, the blood of someone she loves.

Would you have the guts to do what Majesty did and try and find the two kids that are going to do the church killing?

The protagonist, Majesty Alistair, can’t see them clearly or hear everything that’s said, but while running in the woods one day, she overhears two fellow students planning a church massacre and hides where they can’t see her.  As it’s revealed at the beginning of my book, her credibility with police is already shot because she’s been hounding them about her father’s car accident--that she doesn’t totally believe was an accident-- and also all the strange happenings in her neighborhood. So she runs to her best friend, Derek, for advice. She tells him what she heard and explains her cry-wolf situation, and he convinces her to leave an anonymous tip. She agrees that’s the best plan and calls the cops from a payphone the next day, giving them the bits she overheard. But the conspirators call her at the payphone, clearly showing her that not only do they know who she is, but they’re already tracking her. They threaten to kill someone she loves if she talks to the police again or tries to stop them. That threat binds her hands and closes off the avenues she can pursue.

I probably would have approached it differently and gone to the cops right from the start, mainly because I am not a resourceful person at all. I’m no techie. I don’t know anything about solving crime or law. As it was, I had to interview a Richmond cop with all my procedure questions. I don’t buy the latest gadgets or smartphones, I only have an LG 800G through Tracfone. I’m kind of a wimp and don’t rise up to battles well. And, as Preston says in the book, “I even suck at clue.” I do. I almost never figure out the mystery on shows or in books. Majesty has far more guts, knowhow and perseverance than me. Considering all she went through, I would’ve crumbled. I would love to be strong like that. But I’m so not.

However, if circumstances were exactly the same for me in that kind of scenario, with my path to the police blocked, with my avenues of getting the word out closed off, with threats hanging over my head, there’s no way I could sit by and let people die either. I’d do whatever I could to try and thwart it. Or at least I hope I would. Who could really live with that knowledge after the fact? To let, countless people die? Yeah, no matter how wimpy or clueless I am, I still couldn’t do it. My love for life will always push me to do the right thing.

Patti Callahan Henry Releases WILDFLOWERS Mobile App

Social Game Inspired by Author’s Bestselling Novel COMING UP FOR AIR

ATLANTA – “There is no ordinary. All flowers are extraordinary.”

So says Ellie, the protagonist of New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry’s novel COMING UP FOR AIR. Ellie utters these words because she is devastated that her mother has ripped out the wildflowers she scattered in a carefully manicured garden.

Suppressing her wild nature, Ellie grows up to find herself in a suffocating marriage and an unfulfilling life – until at last she is able to reclaim the spirit of a wildflower.

Now fans of the novel (and anyone who has or appreciates someone with an untamed spirit) can also claim Ellie's spirit and send virtual wildflowers to their friends with the WILDFLOWERS mobile app, available for the iPhone and in the App Store starting May 15. Every wildflower sent through the app has its own meaning and includes a personal message from the sender, allowing users to convey wishes of hope, love, encouragement, inspiration, and more.

With original, "extraordinary" illustrations by award-winning illustrator Stefan Kjartansson, based on a fusion of Japanese woodcuts and Scandinavian design tradition, WILDFLOWERS is the first collaboration between Henry and the creative powers at Armchair Media (armchairmedia.com) and Chronicle (thisischronicle.com).

The first mobile app social game inspired by a novel, WILDFLOWERS expands the universe of COMING UP FOR AIR, currently available in hard cover and due out in paperback on May 22. Through the novel, readers learn an appreciation for a life that blossoms in unexpected ways. The WILDFLOWERS app takes the novel's ecosystem and themes, and brings it to life in the real world.

Henry helped develop the app from conception. A busy mom of three and a wife in addition to a NYT bestselling novelist – not to mention a heavy user of mobile apps herself – she knows well the hectic life of many of her readers, so she wanted the app to be quick and simple to use.

“I told the developers that you should be able to send a wildflower to a friend while standing in the grocery store line,” she says. “It should be that easy to reach out and let a friend or loved one know you are thinking of them.”

WILDFLOWERS is just that easy, passing the grocery line test with flying colors while allowing users to send wildflowers via email, Facebook, or, for those friends who also have WILDFLOWERS installed, app-to-app. An in-app meadow allows users to look back over all the wildflowers they have received, reminders of the vitality that others see in them.

For more information about WILDFLOWERS and for a link to the app in the App Store, visit Patti Callahan Henry’s website. [http://www.patticallahanhenry.com/wildflower/]

Choices *REVIEW*

Summary-

Hearts break. Loved ones are lost. Life keeps moving.

Olivia Martin’s afterlife was more dangerous and confusing than her life ever was. She thought she was ready to come back, to forget about Holden and to let go of the rage consuming her. Fulfilling her destiny as a guardian was all that mattered—the past could stay hidden in the crevices of her mind. However, when guardians are murdered and the evidence points towards jinn, she has to do something. To save anyone’s future, Olivia will have to confront the one person from her past she is terrified to see.

Holden waited for Olivia with the hope he would see her one more time. But when she didn’t return, he found salvation in darkness. The black and twisted road made it easier to forget what he lost than to live with the memory of what he had. An unexpected promotion shoves him into a world of intoxicating power and influence. Holden will have to choose between his new life and the woman he thought was gone forever.

From the ashes of Secrets, Choices are born that will change everything.

Rating-

Review-
Love is HELL...or at least it feels that way to newly dead Guardian Olivia.
Having lost her life at the hands of murderous demons as her jinni lover looked on;
Olivia knows better than anyone that her dark lover Holden should be the last thing
on her mind.
The problem?
He isn't.
Liz Schulte's "Choices" is a breath of fresh air in the genre of Paranormal Romance.  It is clear from
the start that the main characters Holden and Olivia share a love that has the power to transcend the
confines of death.  The question that these two must answer along with readers is...can love trump destiny?
The answer to this is not as black and white as one would think.
You see, while these two struggle with the lure of "forbidden fruit", there is sinister work afoot that
could upset the delicate balance between good and evil in the universe.
Add to this the deliciousness that is Olivia's hunky Guardian mentor Quintus, and the
underhanded sleaze that is Holden's right-hand demon Juliet, and you've got a supe filled
thrill ride that will leave you gasping and guessing until the last sentence.
Though this is a very passionate and emotional read, the passions that these lovers share
are put to use in ways that require that clothes stay ON.
This book just gos to show that there is more than one type of heat that can make a story SIZZLE!
